Volt pricing, a little more defined

Here on Ridestory I've written both about Volt price speculation and its cost of innovation.
This week, General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner was interviewed by talk-show host Charlie Rose, saying that the Volt will sell for around $35,000 to $39,000.
"We initially hoped we could get it for a very, very good price, let's say below $30,000. It's going to be more expensive than that for the first couple of years. Haven't finalized it...but it'll be in the mid- to high-thirties is my best guess."
Wagoner also reiterated GM's desire for "a significant subsidy" from the government. GM has been lobbying Congress for a $7,000 tax credit for Volt buyers. Theoretically, with the subsidy, buyers could get the car for less that $30,000.
Of course, it's still all speculation. The 2010 model year could prove interesting for General Motors.

I think that in our time, a car with an electric motor, the lithium batteries, with the price below 30,000 dollars is impossible
The vehicle is designed to run purely on electricity from on-board batteries for up to 40 miles. It is expected that the Volt's 300-pound battery pack will be among its most-expensive components, has estimated each such lithium-ion pack may cost about $10,000.

Tesla has developed an amazing car, especially considering the Roadsters range. But its price and availability make it available to only a select few.
Of course the Tesla Roadster is a niche market- it is a $110K car! My point about Tesla in comparing it to the Volt is that tech advances will bring the price of the Volt down and, while it will not bring down the price of the Roadster, the Tesla White Star will be comparably as affordable as the Volt.
Any credits announced are going to make the waiting list grow and I understand that the list is at about 35,000 hungry wanna-be Volt owners.
It is an interesting contrast to the Tesla roadster which has a smaller but still healthy list of drivers who have put down deposits but are still away from getting possession of the delayed product.
As carbon production improves as a result of government subsidized programs and battery technology is enhanced, producing both the Volt and the Tesla Roadster will become more less expensive for the manufacturers but the Roadster's cost to the consumer will not decrease unlike GM's commitment to lower cost to the buyers of the Volt.
Maybe Tesla's White Start model will be more affordable and be competition for the Volt.
