Audi's "Truth in 24" now available in HD

You have two choices now when downloading Audi's "Truth in 24" documentary from iTunes. Apple has now made available an HD version of the movie from Chicago-based Intersport and NFL Films.

I just watched it and, for Audi fans and racing buffs in particular, it's an outstanding documentary. Jason Statham did a terrific job with the voice overs without being an intrusion.

Unfortunately, the last I checked, it was only available to download from iTunes in the U.S. Hopefully that will be rectified soon for Audi's huge global audience.

Audi expects to increase market share

Audi A5

Audi A5 and R8 lead January sales

Even though the economy is sputtering, Audi's January new car sales weren't too bad. Overall though, their car sales were down from their record sales in January of last year. In January of this year, they sold 4,722 vehicles.

Audi's two successful models? The A5 and R8. Consider this...their A5 and R8 models experienced a sales increase of more than 75%.

The Audi A5 posted a 76.3% increase over last January with 603 units sold in January 2009. The Audi R8 broke its January sales record with over 107 units sold, an increase of 75.4% over January’s sales a year ago.

Audi expects their overall market share in 2009 to increase.

"The softening economy creates challenges to our industry, but the Audi position in the market continues its upward trend. We are confident this momentum will leave Audi in a better position when the economy turns around," said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. "As demonstrated in our successful efforts surrounding the recent presidential inauguration and our Super Bowl presence, Audi intends to remain a top-of-mind choice for U.S. luxury car buyers."

Audi must be doing something right. How is it that some car makers still sell cars, even in a down economy? Sure, Audi is a luxury brand. But even wealthy buyers are having second thoughts about making purchases right now.

Can it be that Audi "gets it"? Somehow, they've figured out what buyers want. And I say that with tongue-in-cheek. Of course they get it! They deliver cars that are beautiful. Arguably with a certain German bauhaus styling, but, nonetheless, cars you want to own. Not to mention cars you want to sit in. Let's face it. You don't drive a car from the outside. The interior matters, with quality materials and workmanship making the inside of a car a nice place to be. Not to mention, a place to be during an hour long commute.

Anyone else care to chime in? Has Audi cornered the market on classic design and quality workmanship? What other car maker do you feel trumps Audi's styling?

2009 Audi S3

2009 Audi S3

European model gets seven-speed, dual-clutch S-Tronic gearbox
Unfortunately, no news from Audi if the S3 will be available here with this incredible new transmission. European owners will benefit from better fuel economy, slightly better performance and lower emissions.

Newly equipped S3's will be just a tick faster to 62 mph, hitting it in 5.5 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the previous model. Gas mileage is slightly better as well, where you'll get 28.3 mpg, up from 27.6. Your CO2 emissions will also improve, from 0.7 lb per mile to 0.68. The S3's 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder packs 261 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. Not bad from a little four-banger!

Starting October 1st, European buyers can place their orders and expect delivery in mid-December. The optional seven-speed dual-clutch costs $2,578. So an S-Tronic equipped S3 will start at $51,424.

A bit pricey for a relatively small sport-hatch? Maybe, but it is an Audi. With a car like this, you get guiltless fun. Excellent gas mileage and lower emissions, plus the knowledge that you can carve it up whenever you like.

Audi R10 TDI at Road Atlanta

Audi R10 TDI

This weekends "Petit Le Mans" debuts the "Green Challenge"
The American Le Mans Series heads to Road Atlanta this weekend, with the Audi R10 TDI looking to score its third consecutive victory.

The 1000-mile "Little Le Mans" was introduced in 1998, with Audi making its first appearance at Road Atlanta in 2000. Audi has won the race every year since, with six Audi R8 wins, followed by wins the last two years in the R10 TDI.

Audi has recorded 20 wins with the R10 TDI, 16 of them in the American Le Mans Series.

Audi R10 TDI"I was immediately impressed when I drove the car for the first time," remembers Lucas Luhr, who won the Drivers’ Championship with Marco Werner with two races remaining in the 2008 ALMS LMP1 class.

"It’s absolutely fascinating just how the TDI engine pushes."

Included in this weekends race, competitors will be taking part for the first time in the "Green Challenge", a special classification that takes into consideration fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

TDI launches for America
In addition, Audi has announced the launch of their TDI technology for the American market with the availability of the 2009 Q7 3.0 TDI.

In October, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI will take part in the Audi Mileage Marathon, a two week trek across the United States to showcase their efficient diesel technology.

The Mileage Marathon will be made up of 13 stages, starting in New York and finishing up in Los Angeles. The 4,800 mile trek starts October 5 and concludes on the 20th, with 184 drivers representing North America, Europe and Asia.

This is an excellent example of proven racing technology making its way into the every day car. Will this help American car buyers accept diesel more readily? Only time will tell. Diesel hasn't exactly taken off here as it has in the rest of the world.

Steve Haas has an excellent article on the Mota Blog regarding diesels, its unexpected competition, the hybrid, and its chances of being accepted now after past failures. It's a good read and makes you think, just how green do I want to be?

Audi and new media

Audi S4

In addition to styling, I also enjoy talking about branding. Is there anything more important in the automotive industry than projecting a brand that compels consumers to buy? Do it successfully and buyers flock to your showrooms. Miss the mark and you're left with lots jammed full of new cars and millions of dollars in lost sales.

In the age of new media, Audi is taking a decidedly different approach as they launch their new models. It began with the film-like introduction of the R8 during the Super Bowl earlier this year. But it has evolved even further with the debut of the 2009 Audi A4.

A couple of days ago, Audi announced the launch of their new advertising campaign for the all-new A4 by continuing their Truth in Engineering theme that began with the R8 and helped launch the A5.

The new A4 campaign began during the Olympics with the TV airing of "Living Room", the morphing of a traditionally designed room into something quite modern. But this is a key point in Audi's branding message. Move away from the old establishment toward luxury that is comfortable and approachable. According to Audi, "The spot introduces the concept of progress and delivers the message that the all-new A4 embodies that concept."

But to further my point about new media, Audi is pushing beyond the TV screen. As expected, new online banner advertising is part of it, attempting to clarify the distinctions between the A4 and its competitors.

But a really sweet web addition is an iPhone dedicated microsite. It makes it easy for owners of the cutting edge phone to check the new car out whenever and wherever they are with information and video about the car. You can even check out how the car looks in different colors by simply tapping on color swatches. Very cool. By the way, I'll take mine in black.

In addition to the microsite, Audi has developed their own iPhone application, the A4 Driving Challenge. Available through Apple's App Store, the game allows you to drive the A4 on the phone's screen. Take it from me though, it's not an easy game. Maybe with some practice I'll get better at it. But I'm no gamer so I'm not so sure!

One thing is clear, Audi is hoping to take advantage of new media. Traditional media is fine, but Audi hopes to garner more attention by breaking out of the old institutions and improve their brand in new ways. My guess is that they will be successful.

Audi's new dual-clutch not available in America

Audi S tronic 7-speed

As the choices in green technology seem to be growing, driving enthusiasts and the technology they crave seem to be placed on the back burner, as least here in America.

As we noted recently in "The death of the manual", Pontiac has nixed the idea of putting a six-speed manual in their G8 GT, holding it out for the GXP model only. Now Audi has announced their new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, only to say that it won't be available in cars sold in America.

Now, we're huge fans of Audi here at Ridestory who arguably have one of the best vehicle lineups by any manufacturer. And this new dual-clutch transmission is just another technological leap for them. Called the S tronic, this new dual-clutch gear box will be able to manage more torque at higher RPMs, up to 9,000 rpm and 550 Nm or 405.66 lb-ft to be exact. Consequently, Audi buyers interested in future S and RS car purchases, such as the S4, RS4 and RS5, will have this new gearbox available to them.

But this is where Audi's plans hit the skids for us. The plan is that this new S tronic will only be available on European models. Apparently, Audi is worried Americans will complain about the gear boxes shift quality, which has a harder edge to it.

Are American performance car buyers that much different than their European counterparts? If you're buying a performance-minded car, don't you expect it to behave differently than a "normal" car? As we noted in our article about the G8, we're traditionalists who prefer a good six-speed manual, so opting for Audi's manual in a choice S5 or R8 would be a no brainer. But Audi should offer their latest gear boxes in cars the performance buyer knows about.

2009 Audi RS8 to pack twin-turbocharged V10 power

Audi RS8

Contrary to earlier reports, the Audi RS8 is confirmed for delivery in the second quarter of 2009 and will share the RS6's twin-turbocharged, 572bhp V10.

Autocar is reporting that the RS8 should prove to be the fastest Audi ever with a zero to 62mph sprint of less than 4 seconds, reaching 100mph 4.5 seconds later and top out well north of 200mph.

Wolfgang Hatz, head of Audi powertrain development, said, “The car is now signed off, and will appear during the second quarter of 2009.”

“I can’t say much about it until then,” but he did confirm the RS6's V10 as the cars powerplant.

Audi RS8 prototypeInitial reports were that Audi was having cooling problems with the twin-turbo V10, further proven by an RS8 prototype's "carbeque" at the Nordscheife in 2006.

Quattro GmbH boss Werner Froweim said the RS8 would get a new 5.2-liter V10, based on the existing 4.2-liter V8 currently used in the R8 and outgoing RS4.

Apparently though, the cooling problem has been solved. Much of the work was done with the V12 TDi concept which would logically carry over for a V10-powered RS8.

“Why would we spend money developing a whole new engine for this car, when we already have such a good one,” Hatz said.

Audi's R8 Spider: A better exotic drop-top?

Audi R8 Spider
It's no secret to anyone who follows auto news with us that we love the R8, as we followed most recently with the kick-off of Audi's new advertising blitz during the Superbowl. And Car Magazine's interpretation of what the R8 Spider may look like is incredible. No, this is not a production-ready convertible R8 but likely very close.

Now, is this better looking than other exotic convertibles? Ferrari's, both past and present, are always considered beautiful. Porsche's cabriolet, maybe not so much. Lamborghini's Gallardo Spyder also looks pretty good, but better than this R8?

Let us know what you think. Any exotic drop-top that you just love and couldn't live without? Do you own a convertible exotic? Let us know what you think.

2008 RS6 Avant: The hottest Audi yet

Audi RS6 Avant
Just continuing along with an Audi theme today, Audi recently released some fantastic images of one of their hottest model's yet, the RS6 Avant.

Yes, it's a wagon. But it's a very fast, very powerful German wagon! Just think of it as a high-performance 5-door.

Drool over the photos because that's probably as close as you'll get to it. Only a limited number are set for release now in 2008 and all have been claimed by some high-rolling soccer moms shuttling kids and dogs around town.

The specs? Incredible...
• 580-horsepower, 480 lb-ft twin-turbo V10 TFSI
• 0-62 mph in a scant 4.6 seconds
• Top speed: 155 mph
• Quattro all-wheel-drive
• Optional ceramic composite brakes
• 6-speed tiptronic

Audi counting down to kickoff

Audi of America
Take a moment and check out the updated Audi USA web site. They've got a clock counting down until the moment of truth. No doubt referencing the much talked about advertising campaign they are launching during this Sunday's Super Bowl.

More than likely the new campaign will center on establishing a new image for Audi here in the states. Unfortunately for Audi, their brand isn't held in the same regard as Mercedes and BMW. The focus will be to change that impression, positioning Audi as a major player in the luxury performance segment.

When you visit Audi's site, register for your own sneak preview of the Audi Super Bowl commercial. As a registered viewer, you will be able to watch it Sunday morning.
